Additional Comments:

The Lions had already played their London rivals three times prior to this encounter, but the Greyhounds knew that Lee Valley were fielding a stronger side who had recently been riding on a wave of good results.

Haringey were clearly untroubled by this as Callum Mathison took advantage of what was already their third powerplay situation at only 07:56. The goal came as the puck rebounded off Stefan Nubert’s pads and headed straight into the back of the net. Before the Lions even had the chance to catch their breath the Greyhounds struck again at 08:03, Scott Cannam scoring the first of a hat-trick.

The Lions then pounced as Nick Burton sat out 2-mins for cross-checking. Great play from James Scott-Joseph secured Richard Hodge the opportunity to score Lee Valley’s first of the night. Lions then equalised at 13:36 thanks to a powerful slapshot from Ben Williams that was tapped in by Romanas Fedotovas, (second assist going to Andy Watt).

The first period had been a success for the Lions whose opponents were riding high in the league table. The second period, however, saw Haringey assert their dominance by scoring four goals to the Lions’ one. Lee Valley’s goal was a short-handed cracker at 32:11. Neatly scored by Rob Courtman it was equally well assisted by Andrzej Maslak in what was an example of textbook teamwork. Said Man of the Match Courtman, “We worked hard that shift. I turned the puck over in the centre of the ice and passed it to Maslak which left us two on one. Maslak made a great pass back to me and I beat the keeper on his glove side. Sweet goal!”

With the score standing at 3-6 the third period saw Lions’ netminder Stefan Nubert benched in favour of back-up Glen Jackson. Lee Valley were first to score, James Hatfull pounding a forceful slapshot past David Wride, assists going to Paul O’Neill and Andrzej Maslak. The narrowing scoreline caused Haringey to call a time-out but it wasn’t until 50:22 that the Greyhounds scored their final goal, Andy Johnstone being assisted by brother Rob.

Haringey’s Lee Mercer boarded James Scott-Joseph at 53:42 and a punch-up ensued which resulted in both players being sent for early showers.
