Additional Comments by Heather Osborne:

Cardiff came out with all guns blazing and within 10 seconds had scored the first of their five first period goals. The Devils’ scorers were David James, Steve Fisher, Wes Spencer, Jamie Hayes and Gil Lamarche. Unfortunately for Lee Valley there was no bounce-back-ability for the 11 that made the trip and the team was further cut to 10 when #4, Billy Whitney, suffered an accidental head injury from being hit in the head by the puck.

The first period ended with a cross check from behind, by Maytas Vas on Cardiff’s #14, Nicky Lewis. Devils’ Gareth Dixon decided to step in, handbags were thrown, and both deserved their time in the sin bin.

Second period was not short of goals with Cardiff scoring 6, Gil Lamarche either scoring or assisting on nearly every goal. Some smart passing made an opening for Scott Beeson to rip the puck into the back of the net at 34:49, with assists from Maytas Vas and coach Eddie Joseph. This gave the away supporters something to cheer about. Niggling injuries were sustained, but the players double-shifted where necessary with forwards playing in defence and the Lions giving 100% effort. Cardiff went in 11-1 and deserved the lead with their crisp passing and skating.

In the third period David James scored twice for Cardiff, as did Steven Deacon, with just one for Gil Lamarche. The Lions’ supporters were pleased to see Lions’ Man of the Match, Rob Courtman, scoring the Lions’ second, assisted by Ben Osborne. The goal that showed a never-say-die attitude, with Osborne going through several players shooting and Courtman, who never stopped skating the whole match, picking up the rebound and slotting it in. At the final buzzer the score was 16-2.

Cardiff bombarded the Lions throughout the whole game, with Stefan Nubert facing no fewer than 75 shots. Our depleted squad showed guts but were no match for a strong experienced squad of 22 who continually rotated four lines. Cardiff are one of the teams at the top of our League and rightly so.

Praise has to go to a Lions team that showed great sportsmanship, played for 60 minutes and still managed a smile at the end of it all. Thanks to the Cardiff supporters for making us feel welcome.

(…and thanks to Heather for providing a great report)
