Here’s what was printed in the match programme…

“Our visitors this evening are probably the most hockeywise team that any British side is ever likely to meet on home ice. The Don Mills Comets are regular visitors to Europe and were last seen in London in March 1983 when they defeated Streatham Redskins by 7 goals to 2. Don Mills, by the way, is a suburb of Toronto and not the name of the team’s owner!

“Last Sunday the Lions garnered two more valuable league points when they beat Altrincham Aces by 4 goals to 2. It was good to see Jim Gleeson get his first league goal and Simon Murray too had his shooting eye in when bagging a brace. Redoubtable Will ‘Thumper’ Fish bagged another. Amongst the guys who got the assists was our new boy, Steve McCormack, who registered his first point with us. Captain Geoff got two and Alan, Freddie and both Daves notched one apiece.

“The Comets include in their ranks players with professional hockey experience in the NHL and Swedish and German teams. You can therefore be assured of seeing some really classy playmaking and their passing when skating flat out is a delight to behold, seldom does a pass fail to connect. Around the net these guys are poison, the goalie just cannot get set for a shot because he doesn’t know from which player it will come – such is the machine gun-like rapidity with which the puck is passed around.

“Next Saturday we have Grimsby Buffaloes visiting us and the Lions will be out to stampede them once again, but at home this time.

“Geof Williams is additionally sponsored by the Waltham Forest Guardian. If there is a representative from any organisation who might be willing to consider sponsorship of any player please contact Mike Smith, the Ice Centre Manager.”

Dave Rapley missed this game as he’d strained his back by lugging heavy carpets around (!) and Alan Sandford had to be sidelined for a period of rest as he’d been suffering from leg injuries for a number of weeks.

Referee for this game was Harris, Linesmen were Milsom and Harber.
