Additional Comments: This was my first ever ice hockey match and what a match it was because it only lasted for two periods before Glasgow decided they’d had enough of the rough stuff and walked off! The walk-off happened after Bill Kirk allegedly spat at Andy Leggatt (Bill would later become a Lions import!). This came after no less than nine individual penalties for Roughing, four of which were handed out at 30:40 (to Andy Leggatt, Geof Williams, Bill Kirk and N McLewwan). Kirk rounded things off nicely at 39:34 with a 2+Game and that was that. The match programme of 7/12/86 contained a “Blast from the Past” column, written by Mike Grafton, in which the following was shown for this Heineken Division One game : Lions’ scorers: Janne Lehti 2+2, Ari Arvila 2+1, Geof Williams 1+0, Chris Leggatt 0+1, Andy Leggatt 0+1 “Game awarded as default 5-0 win to Lee Valley, included on club records as a Challenge game, as all figures were deleted from League records. “A thorough performance by Lions was marred by some questionable tactics by a number of Glasgow players. Lions had taken advantage of their Power Play opportunities to lead 5-1 with the second interval coming up. Bill Kirk had just had a breakaway shot saved by Pennanen and in frustration spat at one of the Lions players. “This was deemed by Referee Burton as being a Gross Misconduct offence, so Kirk was sent to the locker room. Dynamos then refused to play on and withdrew from the game at 39:34.” |
