Additional Comments:

It was obvious from the start that the scoreline was going to be horrendous. One look at the number of players on each bench said everything you needed to know – while Basingstoke were bursting at the seams Lee Valley had only the bare minimum. Defenders Mark Swaine and Romanas Fedotovas were sidelined with injuries and other key players were also missing. One player’s car broke down, another two only made it to the rink in time for the second period. So, we were up against it from the start.

Despite the odds being so heavily stacked against us it has to be said that all those who did make it put in a tremendous amount of effort throughout. At no point did they admit defeat and the fighting spirit continued through to the bitter end.

As if the Lions didn’t have enough bad luck, defender Billy Whitney was stretchered off in the opening minutes of the game with torn shoulder ligaments. With defencemen so few on the ground/ice it wasn’t too surprising that we were 1-9 down at the end of the first period. The Lions’ first goal had been scored by Scott Beeson on a delayed penalty call.

Stefan Nubert had already faced 21 shots on goal but the second period saw Glen Jackson face an increased onslaught of 27. Mark Saunders managed to score for the Lions with a power play goal assisted by Scott Beeson (despite having so few players we’d scored double the number we’d managed against Basingstoke at home the previous week).

Basingstoke’s goals came in at all angles, goals 14 and 16 appearing to fly in past Jackson’s head. Glen stayed in goal to begin the third period before Stefan Nubert resumed his position to finish the final few minutes.

Everyone in the rink joined in to give a round of applause to the Lions for the incredible effort and energy they had put into the game. A final kind gesture was to award the whole team Man of the Match.

Referee was Szucs, Linesmen were Davis and Davis.
