Additional Comments:

Sitting just one point below league-leaders Streatham Redskins this match was Invicta Dynamos’ opportunity to snatch the top spot from their rivals. Without Richard Hodge and the injured Andrzej Maslak the Lions were nonetheless determined not to give Invicta the easy victory they desired.

The first period saw Lee Valley step up to the mark and match their opposition remarkably well. Between the pipes was 17-year-old Glen Jackson who blocked several attacks before conceding a powerplay goal to Damien Welch at 14:31. Jackson continued to ward off shots, keeping the scoreline to just 0-1 when the buzzer sounded.

Jackson set up position between the pipes for the second period but just minutes in he suffered an injury to his leg and was in obvious discomfort. Coach Serge Smolenko decided Jackson should not continue and replaced him at 23:53 with Stefan Nubert. With no time to warm up Nubert faced a baptism of fire and let in two goals from two shots. Having been on the ice for little more than two minutes Nubert was substituted for Glen Jackson.

Jackson’s injury had clearly not subsided and by 32:05 he was back on the bench. Stefan Nubert stayed in goal for the remainder of the game and staved off the additional shots he faced during the second period.

At 41:10, as Invicta launched a further advance on goal Lions’ Romanas Fedotovas fell to the ice and momentarily lost control of his stick. This was deemed by referee Dean Russell-Samways (a former netminder for the Medway Bears, Invicta Dynamos’ previous name) to be deliberate and a penalty shot was awarded. The resulting goal was scored by Stuart Low and put the Dynamos 4-0 up.

This event proved to be a pivot point in the game as the Lions ran out of optimism. Goals flowed into Nubert’s net in quick succession, four of which were scored on powerplay opportunities. There was a sigh of relief when the final period buzzer sounded. The score was a disastrous 0-11, which made it the reformed Lions’ first game without a single goal.

With no goals scored and too many goals conceded the choice for Man of the Match may have been less obvious than usual but it was awarded to Michael Ranby whose valiant attempts to put the Lions on the scoreboard (together with Michael Jacobs, in my opinion) had not gone unnoticed.

Referee was Russell-Samways, Linesmen were Goebel and Kent.
