Additional Comments: Oxford took just over 3 minutes to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Nick Oliver. The Lions put up a good defence and managed to keep the number of goals scored against them in the first period to 3, the second goal being a mighty slapshot. Penalties were low too, with just 2-mins apiece. In the second period the Stars were quick to score again, just 50 seconds in with the second goal from Dean Francis. 0-4 down and the Lions’ fighting spirit appeared to evaporate and a fairly eventless 10 minutes was to follow before the Stars really woke up, hammering a hefty six goals past Stefan between 31:57 and 38:20 and taking advantage of a weakened defence. The Lions limped back into the dressing room at the end of the second period 10-0 down. According to some the Oxford team turned down the intensity in the final period. Nonetheless, Stefan still faced 14 shots without conceding any goals. In contrast the Lions skated hard and put in a lot of effort. New signing, Kwabina Oppong-Addai, took advantage of a powerplay situation at 44:50 and scored unassisted, spoiling Jamie Thompson’s shut-out attempt. It would be our only goal of the night but hey, at least it meant we won the period! Referee was Tottman, Linesmen were Ashraff and Ward (Joy Tottman became the first woman to referee men’s senior hockey and in 2006 she will be officiating in the women’s hockey events at the Winter Olympics). |
