Farewell and thanks to Blair

On behalf of everyone involved with the Lions, I would like to say a massive thanks and farewell to our coach and team captain, Blair Dubyk.

Blair has made the decision to relocate back to his native Canada and he will be sorely missed at the Den. Under his leadership the Lions have seen definite, marked improvement and have had some great games over the past two seasons, including some shock results (I don’t think anyone would have predicted a 12-1 win over Bristol, for a start).

The Canadian National Anthem was played before last night’s match and Blair received the send-off he deserved over at the Princess of Wales pub afterwards.

Farewell, Blair, have a safe flight home and thanks so much for everything you have done for our team.

Full team list

I’ve been given the full team list and they are as follows (in no particular order!):

Blair Dubyk, James Scott-Joseph, Romanas Fedotovas, George Alley, Ruth Cattell, Jack Ball, Scott Beeson, Joe Berry, Shane Bojenko, Phil Carson, Gary Dodds, James Gosling, Steve Grout, James Hatfull, Calum Heath, Richard Hodge, Joshua Irish, Adam Peach, Glenn Roper, Philippe Mueller and Janus Hutcheon.

It’s great to see so many of last year’s players returning and the squad being strengthened by a couple of talented ex-Lions. Let’s hope we have a great season ahead of us.

Lions add “hotshot” and “playmaker” plus netminders

George Alley returns to the Lions as netminder, joining Ruth Cattell and new recruit, Steve Grout. As promised, here is Blair Dubyk’s statement on recent signings:

Lee Valley Lions have been gearing up for the 2011/12 season with a series of trials for the new squad. A number of last season’s favourites have already re-signed for the team, including Player’s Player of the Year, Calum Heath, and Canadian-born player/coach, Blair Dubyk.

Dubyk is excited to add more players to the team, including Richard Hodge, who is returning for his fifth season with the Lions. Dubyk said, “Hodgie had a good year last year, despite not getting on the score sheet as often as he would have liked. His stats may not have been what he wanted them to be, but he’s the guy who starts the play from his own end, always in position and reliable. Every team needs guys like him and it’s great to have him back.”

Another boost to the squad is former Lion, Scott Beeson. Beeson returns to the team after stints in the ENL1 with Haringey Greyhounds and Invicta Dynamos. “Scott and I spoke late last season about the possibility of him coming back to Lee Valley,” recalled Dubyk, “but the transfer deadline was just days away. I know Scott as a hardworking forward who can put the puck in the net and he will be a big asset to the team.”

This season the Lions have announced a new netminder who joins existing keepers, Ruth Cattell and George Alley. Steve Grout makes his way over to Lee Valley after playing numerous years with the Invicta Mustangs. Dubyk said of Grout, “Steve contacted us at the begining of training camp, wanting a change of scenery. He brings years of knowledge and experience to help with our other two goalies and I have already noticed a positive change in our goaltending. With three of them fighting for the number one spot, I expect them to stay sharp, not only in games but in practices. And it’s been working.”

Beeson is back

I have received the good news tonight that former high-scoring Lee Valley player, Scott Beeson, has returned to the Lions following a stint with Invicta Dynamos. Also re-signing for another season is Richard Hodge. A statement from the coaches will be posted in the next few days.

Welcome back, Calum

Lee Valley Lions are pleased to announce the return of Calum Heath for the 2011/2012 season.

Coach Blair Dubyk is happy to have Calum back on the squad. He said of last year’s Players’ Player of the Year recipient, “I know Calum was skating with some teams in the league above since the end of last season and I thought for sure we would lose him.”

The hard-working forward told the club at the beginning of July that he wanted to come back to Lee Valley for another year to define his skills. “It was a good way to start off training camp,” Dubyk stated after hearing of Calum’s plans.

Welcome back, Calum!
