Additional Comments: Lions’ first game of the season was the home leg of a new Sumner Challenge Cup which we hope to play annually (named in memory of Chas Sumner, the grandfather of ex-Lion Jon Beckett). Play opened quickly for the Lions when Joe Berry scored at 03:12, assisted by Mark Saunders. The goal was actually scored short-handed as Kwabina Oppong-Addai was serving 2-mins for Slashing. Lions continued on the offensive, Michael Ranby whacking a great shot into the back of the net at 19:27, the assist going to Oppong-Addai. Haringey were further shocked as the Lions came out in the second period and promptly went 3-0 up, thanks to an unassisted goal scored by Kwabina Oppong-Addai on a powerplay. However, the Greyhounds were determined to get onto the scoresheet and began to up their game. Danny Cox scored short-handed at 31:02, assisted by Andy Johnston but the Lions defence held strong and the second period closed with both teams having scored once. Lions continued to battle strongly in the final period, but the constant stream of penalties being handed out by referee Smith began to take its toll. As Kwabina Oppong-Addai and Richard Hodge languished in the sin bin Haringey struck with their first power play goal, scored by ex-Lion Gary Dodds. A further power play goal was hammered home by Ricky Rutherford at 51:34 to complete the scoring. A special mention must go to netminder Stefan Nubert, who faced no fewer than 45 shots yet let in only 3 – well done, mate. Referee was Smith, Linesmen were Motten and McShane. |
