Additional Comments:

The second leg of the Sumner Cup saw a completely different game to that of the home leg the day before. Haringey meant business right from the start and although the Lions constantly tried to get near the goal they were thwarted by a strong defence.

Haringey’s first goal came on a power play at just 03:39 into the game. A clear slapshot from Rob Johnston sailed past George Alley and was well executed. Play continued uneventfully (aside from numerous minor penalties, thanks to rule changes brought in this season) until 17:15 when Chris Goddard scored, assisted by Alistair Band and Gary Dodds. By this time both ends of the ice had turned decidedly misty and this must have affected the netminders’ vision to some degree throughout the match.

The second period ended in stalemate, neither team able to score with shots on goal being shamefully low. Penalty minutes were even too with ten apiece, although it has to be said that some decisions were questionable to say the least.

Penalties in the last period, however, were almost non-existent and served to improve the flow of play. Unfortunately this did not work in the Lions’ favour as Haringey scored at 48:26 with a goal from Nick Burton, assisted by Alistair Band and Chris Goddard (a member of last year’s Lions). The Greyhounds’ final goal came at 53:11, courtesy of Ricky Rutherford, assisted by Jan Bestic (who was also once at Lee Valley, having played for the Whalers).

Just seconds later and the Lions finally managed to put a goal past David Wride. Paul O’Neill scored an excellent goal, assisted by Romanas Fedotovas and Rob Courtman. All three players had a strong game and it was a shame this was not reflected in the scoring.

Unfortunately Paul’s goal was to be the Lions’ only goal of the match and the combined score of the home and away legs resulted in Haringey winning the Sumner Cup 7-4.

Referee was Ross, Linesmen were Watt and Soloviov.
