Additional Comments:

The Lions travelled to Solent for their furthest fixture of the season on Sunday, the rain on the journey home a sign of the dismal atmosphere at the end of the second session as the game was abandoned due to an injury to one of the Devils players. More on that later.

Solent introduced their new goalie in this game, Nathan Lawrence, who has iced at EPL level and dressed for the London Knights in the old ISL. The first period was an even affair as both teams sought to gain the advantage, Lee Valley looking for revenge for their thrashing at this venue last year.

The visitors opened the scoring as Stas Prokofiev found the five hole of the new netminder after collecting a pass from Rob Courtman, but the advantage wasn’t to last long as Solent squared the game in the ninth minute. For the rest of the period Lee Valley exerted lots of pressure but failed to score and apart from the odd rush, looked to be in control. Michael Ranby nearly scored with a shot straight from a face-off, Scott Beeson tried a bullet from a narrow angle and “on fire” Nick Alley first hit the post then broke clear, deeked the goalie but put his backhand attempt just wide.

Early in the second the Lions started to take control and James Hatfull scored, assists to Michael Ranby and Joe Berry. Soon after Stas Prokofiev put a pass onto the stick of Scott Beeson who roofed past Lawrence, with a further assist to Nick Alley. Beeson made it a pair as captain Scott Pollak unselfishly spun to provide the pass, rather than shoot, for another low scoring shot. There were one or two further chances that fell to Lee Valley, but weren’t converted, and Solent hit the post before beginning to claw the Lions back. The Devils scored two goals and pinged the crossbar before the Lions regained their composure, James Scott-Joseph scoring effortlessly to re-establish a two goal lead.

Just before the period ended one of the Solent players was injured and I think I should just state the facts. Michael Ranby came off the bench and collided with the player within about 5 metres and he went down hard. The referee allowed play to continue and called no penalty at the time, but whistled the play as soon as he realised the guy was still down. The ambulance was called and as is the norm with any suspected head or neck injury he was not moved. A paramedic was on the scene very quickly but the ambulance did not arrive for about 30 minutes, at which time he was assessed and eventually taken to hospital, I understand he was released later that evening. The game was abandoned after the official had consulted with the head referee. A match penalty was awarded against Michael Ranby at a later stage.

There was just one official refereeing this game – O’Halloran.
