Additional Comments: A challenge match against Cambridge University which was a comfortable win for the Lions. Martin Harris kindly provided me with a copy of the match programme, however, a player list for Cambridge and match stats aren’t shown. Martin had a good excuse for this as he was the match referee! His Linesmen were Harber and Wandaby (unsure if Wandaby is correct spelling). Here’s what was printed in the match programme… “Welcome to the Lee Valley Ice Centre for tonight’s challenge match. Visiting the Lions’ den are the jinx team of 83/84 season, Cambridge University, who beat the Lions three times. We hope to put that right by winning tonight’s game and we wish the Lions the best of luck.” The match programme of 15/11/86 contained a “Blast from the Past” column, written by Peter Cook, in which the following was shown for this Challenge game: Lions’ scorers: Bill Watson 4+2, Fred Sandford 2+1, Alan Sandford 1+1, Dave Rapley 1+0, Mike Allard 0+1, Geof Williams 0+1 “This was a match memorable for one thing only – Lions beating Cambridge for the first time in four attempts; previous scores of 6-7, 3-5 and 6-12 were enough to give Lions some cause for revenge. Lions won at a stroll with Watson again a nightmare for opposing defencemen, turning them inside out at every opportunity. Icing for Cambridge was netminder Richard Steeves who had tried out for Lions as an import earlier in the season.” |
