Additional Comments: The match programme of 29/03/86 included a Match Report for this game which was written by Dave Smythe as follows: “The Lions are now unbeaten on the road in the League for over a year, thanks to this thrilling 5-4 win over the Aces. “The Aces attacked from the start, the shots on goal in the first period (34-11) really emphasises how rampant they were. But, attack as they may, they found Vesa equal to everything they shot at him. The Aces finally opened the scoring at 16:33 when their English forward, Mortimer, beat Vesa at a one-on-one. That was the only goal in a poor first period for the Lions. “Ari Arvila equalised with a Power Play goal 5 minutes after the break, but Gauthier regain the Aces; lead with a Short-Handed effort 3 minutes later. Just 3 minutes before the next goal, the equaliser from Janne. The game really warmed up from then on, but the goalies kept the score at 2-2 until the break. “The Lions were never headed in a traumatic final period. Lions went ahead for the first time with Ari Arvila’s goal 11 minutes into the period, but Gauthier pegged one back a minute later. Chris Leggatt soon regained Lions’ lead with a Short-Handed goal with 5 minutes left on the non-existent clock! Aces’ ‘never say die’ attitude was in evidence again 2 minutes later when Sims scored what we thought was the game-tying goal, but we were all wrong. With just 20 seconds left Ari’s face-off went to Janne who hit a shot through a ruck of players and the unlucky Dunford.” Officials were Burton, Heighway and Johnston. |
