A Match Report was printed in the programme of 15/03/86 (first names of players were not included) and was written by Dave Smythe & Will Freeman as follows…

“The Glasgow goon-revenge tactics (Glasgow had walked off at an earlier game at the Den) that in the early stages looked as though they would work proved in the end to be their downfall, as the Lions stormed back from a 5-goal deficit to win 7-6 and keep their unbeaten record on the road this season.

“The inevitable happened after only 19 seconds when Magnusson (who wasn’t even playing at Lee Valley) drew the first roughing penalty with his ‘I’ve started so I’ll finish’ routine on Geof Williams. The first period wasn’t laden with penalties as the early exchanges proved it might be. Glasgow were in fact good value for their 4-0 first period lead as the Lions just didn’t seem to settle down in the Summit Centre.

“The second period turned out to be the complete opposite of the first, once Dynamos had increased their lead 22 seconds into the period, but Glasgow thought Lions were dead and buried. As Altrincham found out just a week before, never think the game is won, and as Lions tried to come back they decided to rough things up a bit.

“They didn’t intend to play into the hands of Captain Kirk and his men (to boldly goon where no man has gooned before) and had Rodger and Magnusson in the box many times for roughing as Lions began to get on top of the proceedings.

“Lions were back in the match thanks to Richard Doran’s loud but effective team talk at the first break and began to catch Dynamos up in REMARKABLE fashion. Goals from Chris Leggatt and a hat-trick by Janne (at 28:47, 35:36 and 36:18) brought the score to 4-6 at the end of the second stanza.

“With Glasgow going into the last period two goals up the home officials decided to run the clock, much to the disgust of all concerned with the Lions, but the trick backfired as the Lions entered top gear. An Ari penalty shot (at 43:00), after he was brought down on a one-on-one situation, reduced the deficit to a single goal. Only a minute later Janne and Ari combined brilliantly to set up the equaliser for Pip Allard. Lions had a double Power Play when Ari hit the winner with 11 minutes remaining.

“The Lions played their own tricks trying to delay the game whenever they could but this backfired when one oh-so-obvious slow line change at a face-off gave Glasgow a penalty shot. Bestle skated up and went round Vesa, but thinking he had done the hard work took it a little too easy and Vesa made a brilliant stop which gave the Lions two very hard-fought but rewarding League points.”

Glasgow Dynamos actually outshot the Lions 44-38.
