Lee Valley Lions -v- Solihull Barons
06/04/86 (Draw 4-4)
There are no stats or match report available for this game. However, I have been reliably informed by Ian Howitt that this was the first leg of the Division 1 Trophy final. Ian was amongst 200 or so Lions fans at Hobbs Moat Road that night who witnessed Andy Leggatt equalising only about a minute from the end.
He was at the Den a fortnight later to witness the Lions beating the Barons 9-1 in the second leg to take the trophy. Understandably Lee Valley Ice Centre was packed that night. As expected, Lions’ Finns were among the goal-scorers, but other players such as Mike Allard, Ludek Smelik and even Martin Bergin also scored that night. Incredibly in between the two games the Lions played a qualifying game for the Trophy, away to Richmond. The game was academic as we had qualified from our group already and were half way through the final! The Lions won 7-1, with Vesa Pennanen only about 8 minutes from a shut-out when the Flyers finally scored. |
