Additional Comments: The first home game of the new season saw a number of new team member, most notably a complete change of imports – the first since 1984. Doug McEwen had come to the Lions via the Peterborough Pirates, while Dave Hardie had been playing for the Colorado Tigers and Lowell McDonald for Colgate University in the States. Lowell is the son of a former NHL star and had a brother on the USA Olympic team. John Tague had arrived from Oxford and Bob Mitura from Medway. Russ Jackson had now gone to Medway, the goalies effeectively doing a swap! A 14-year-old Jon Beckett was not only playing for the Lions, but playing on the first line! Tari Suwari was back, having become fit by playing through the summer at Romford. Little did we know at the time that Rom Valley Way would lure him there permanently. The Supporters’ Club and Season Tickets were both new this season – as was the kit, although it was still white, green and blue, albeit with a different Lions logo. Lions scored three short-handed goals and two powerplay goals. Of Wildcats’ three goals, two were powerplays and the other was short-handed. Tari Suwari won MOTM deservedly as he scored 3+1! Wildcats’ Les Pearson (#16) was sent off with a Match penalty at 45:11 for attempting to injure. |
