Additional Comments: For our first match of the 1991/92 season we played SKA Leningrad, who were noted in the programme as being “probably the best team ever to have played in the UK.” This was their first match, their others were to be against Humberside, Basingstoke, Nottingham and Cardiff. The programme also mentioned the sad death during the summer of Alec Goldstone, father to Lions’ players Adam and Tony, who was best known for the role he played with Streatham Redskins. For tonight’s match we had guest players in the form of Shannon Hope, Steve Moria and John Lawless from Cardiff, plus Mike Urquhart, but despite our boost in numbers we were clearly outclassed by SKA Leningrad. Referee was Toemen, Linesmen were Moore and Kirkham. |
