Additional Comments: I remember this game as being one of the most exciting and nail-biting I’ve ever seen! It was extra nice to see the Lions fighting back against the odds and nailing the match in spectacular style. We had even had a goal disallowed for no good reason at 05:33, which may have put the team off a bit but it was definitely forgotten by the 3rd period, during which we scored an incredible 7 goals. It was Darcy and Fred’s day, with Darcy scoring 2+5 and Fred scoring 5+1, but nonetheless a great team effort all round. There were quite a number of penalties which indicates it wasn’t the most sporting of matches – various penalties for Roughing, Boarding and Spearing! Rob McCaig came off the worst, receiving 2-mins for Cross Checking, 2+10 for Spearing and 2-mins for High Sticks. The final period held the most tension and excitement. Lions went into it 2-5 down and it looked highly unlikely that we could pull back into the game. We pulled 2 goals back to trail only 4-5 when the Flames scored once more, thanks to Ryan Campbell. We then scored at 46:05 and 48:41, taking us level. Flames pulled ahead again, courtesy of an unassisted goal by Paul Thompson at 51:05. Lions followed this up with a goal from Fred, then an unassisted goal from Steve James at 53:25. Lions were now in the lead, but not for long because it seemed Guildford had an answer to everything and scored once more at 55:36 (Paul Thompson’s hat-trick), bringing the scoreline to 8-8. The tension was really mounting by this point, in the final few minutes of what ended up being a tightly-fought game. Then, with only 10 seconds left on the clock Fred saved the day (assisted by Darcy Cahill and Jon Beckett) with the winning goal of the match. (The flames called a Time-Out after the goal was scored, at 59:50, but nothing came of it, luckily for us!) To say us fans were ecstatic is a major understatement! Referee was Plaistow, Linesmen were Dadswell and Ross. |
